LAMINATE

Laminate is a great option for busy households as an impressive and convincing alternative to natural wood flooring.  Laminate has become increasingly realistic and has several clear benefits:

Manufacture - Laminate consists of a photo image enclosed by a series of protective and high-density layers. These are bonded together to create a highly durable floor. The improvements made in laminate manufacturing has helped to create more genuine finishes and the ability to produce in mass quantities, making it a much cheaper option than natural wood flooring.

Scratch & Water Resistant – The top layer of laminate is highly resistant to scratches and water. This means it can cope with the pressures of day-to-day life although with laminate we still recommend the use of mats in heavy use areas and furniture pads to prolong the wear of the floor. Being water-resistant also enables laminate flooring to easily be laid in kitchens, bathrooms and conservatories as it is less sensitive to water and humidity than some natural products.

Easy Cleanable, Hygienic Surface - Another one of the benefits of laminate flooring is that it is easy to clean, with regular sweeping and mopping with mild detergent and water.

Realistic Design- Some laminates are so natural looking in appearance. With wood effects, you can choose from; no bevel at all; a 2V bevel which accentuates the length of the boards; and 4V which is commonly used on wood, which is the most realistic, emphasising the board all the way round.

Installation

With an in-built click system, laminates are easier to install than solid wood and therefore a more affordable option. The subfloor should be in good condition before laminate flooring is laid down. The underlay will then be laid down to minimise noise and movement and the boards will be laid on top.

Underlay - It’s especially important to consider having a good quality underlay installed, which are designed to insulate the flooring and reduce vibrations as there can be some noise concerns involved with laminate flooring.  An underlay is typically between 5mm-15mm thick and comes as a foam sheet.

Skirting v Scotia - It’s a good idea to consider whether you are going to remove existing skirting and replace once the laminate is laid or the cheaper option, scotia beading to finish the edges of the room.

You may be tempted to install it yourself. If you’re unsure of the process which involves precision and experience ensuring the boards are been cut to the correct measurements and to install them without causing damage, it’s advisable to hire a professional fitter to install and finish your flooring to the highest standard.
