WOOD

Solid Wood

Hardwood flooring, also known as solid wood flooring, is a natural 100% wood product, often made of hardwood species including oak, walnut, and maple.  With solid flooring, each board is cut to size from just one piece of solid wood and styles/grains can vary, dependent on how the wood is cut, and finished with oil or lacquer.  It achieves a warm and natural, look and feel.

Installation - Whatever the method of install, it is a skilled project, but typically the wood planks are nailed or fully bonded to the sub floor.

Environment – As a totally natural product, hardwood flooring is more sensitive to heat and water than other products.  If exposed to humidity and moisture it can swell and in some extreme cases cause buckling and lifting and would not be recommended for areas which could cause a future problem.

Lifespan – With the right maintenance hardwood flooring lasts 30+ years.  It can be sanded and refinished several times to maintain its original appearance.

Solid and Engineered Parquet Flooring

Parquet flooring, made up of individual wood blocks, has become a very popular choice for its elegance and style.  There are many options of finishes and shades, and it comes in a range of patterns including herringbone and chevron.  It can be either a solid wood or engineered product.

Some clients will insist on the real deal in appearance however, it is worth noting that with a good quality engineered parquet, the difference in look is debatable and the benefits include increased stability in humidity, use with underfloor heating and, in theory it is less onerous to install.

Engineered Wood

Engineered wood gives a real wood look and feel with major benefits of more versatility, choice in styles and most importantly enhanced durability and has become a popular choice as an alternative to solid wood.  It can also be used with underfloor heating.  It has a plywood core with a top layer of solid wood which on the surface is identical to real wood in appearance.

Installation – There are several options for install with engineered wood.  It can be fully bonded, nailed/screwed down, floated on underlay and is suitable for use with underfloor heating.

Environment – The stability of the plywood construction means that engineered wood and is much less likely to swell and warp in humid conditions.  It is not waterproof, but some products come with a protective layer against water damage.

Lifespan – Engineered wood should last 25-30 years with maintenance are care.  Unlike hardwood it can’t be refinished as often, however unless fully bonded, damaged planks can be replaced.
